Wet Gas Scrubbers

Type JM  "MICRODYNE"

  • LOW WATER RATE, TYPICALLY
    140L/hr per 1000m3/hr

  • HIGH COLLECTION EFFICIENCY

The Microdyne is a compact high efficiency impingement type wet scrubber. The Microdyne has been nicknamed “the educated pipe”, for it can form part of the duct or ventilation system. Its compact cylindrical shape often allows it to be used at the point of use. Valuable working space can be saved, since the unit can be fitted into extremely confined areas and, if necessary, can be hung from the roof of the building. The Microdyne is used extensively in mining and tunnelling operations.

Where appropriate, an axial booster fan may be used to overcome the pressure loss through the scrubber itself, or a centrifugal fan may be used to power the entire system. Pressure loss through the scrubber is moderate, so power requirements for the booster fan is low.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The Microdyne has two main sections: a mixer section and an eliminator section shown in the cutaway view overview. Air and entrained dust particles enter the mixer section under suction from the booster fan. Water sprays entering the unit supply a heavy boundary layer of water on the impingement element through which the dust laden air must pass. As the dusty air passes through the impingement element, the dust particles are forced to encase themselves in water, thus increasing their effective mass many times.

Leaving the impinger, the dust laden water droplet and air enter the eliminator section of the unit. The eliminator section imparts a strong helical motion to the gas. This cyclonic action drives the droplets to the surface of the blind louvres, each of which is a separate air-tight elimination chamber. The slurry of dust and water drains from the louvres into a sump beneath the dust collector. From the sump, water flows by gravity to the slurry handling system.
